What is “Glare” in LED lights?
Glare is defined by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) as a “condition of vision in which there is discomfort or a reduction in the ability to see details or objects, caused by an unsuitable distribution or range of luminance, or by extreme contrasts”[CIE 2019a].

Disability glare
Disability glare describes the loss of retinal image contrast as a result of intraocular light scatter, or straylight.
People may feel uncomfortable and directly interfere with visibility caused by the intense light in the field of view.
Discomfort glare
Discomfort glare is defined by the CIE as “glare that causes discomfort without necessarily impairing the vision of objects” [CIE 2019b].
People may feel a little uncomfortable when facing an excessively bright light source, but not always cause a visual disturbance.
Three Types of glare
Direct Glare: The light source is direct in the field of view or peripheral vision. and the excessive brightness could make people uncomfortable. The area of direct glare is from the vertical surface 45 ~ 85 °.
Reflected Glare: Caused by the reflected light from the surface of the object in your sight.
Background glare: Excessive light emitted from the background light source affects the vision.
Unified Glare Rating, UGR
It is a measurement used to predict discomfort glare and help people control the risk of facing glare from light fixtures.
UGR = 8 log [0.25/Lb * ∑ᵢ Lᵢ2*ωᵢ/ρᵢ2] that parameters in:
- Background luminance. (cd/m2, Lb )
- The luminance of the apertures of each luminaire in the direction of the observer’s eye. (cd/m2, Lᵢ )
- The solid angle of the luminous parts of each luminaire at the observer’s eye. (sr, ωᵢ )
- Guth position index, ρᵢ: Displacement of luminaire from the line of sight.
Glare light pollution
There are four other kinds of light pollution: glare, clutter, skyglow and light trespass.
Environmental: Sky glow is the brightening of the night sky, mostly over city areas, induced by the electric lights of cars, streetlamps, offices, factories, excessive outdoor lighting, and buildings, turning night into day for people who work or enjoy entertainment after sunset.
Wildlife: For example in Taiwan, more than 8 million birds die by crashing into illuminated buildings annually.
Humans: Our brain will produce Melatonin, a hormone that regulates the sleep cycle and controls disease. This kind of hormone is affected by light pollution, sleeping disorders and other diseases may occur due to the reduction of Melatonin.
