Electrical protection classes defined by the IEC are broadly classified into several categories, including Classes I, II, And III.
What are Protection Classes?
IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) protection classes are used to define the level of safety protection of electrical equipment/devices and indicate the safety measures used to protect against electric shocks. When using electrical and electronic devices, it’s essential to consider their protection class to ensure proper safety measures and compliance with regulations.
There are three primary IEC protection classes: I, II, and III.

Protection Class I
Equipment in which protection against electric shock does not rely on basic insulation only, but includes an additional safety precaution in that accessible conductive parts are connected to the protective earthing conductor in the fixed wiring of the electrical installation in such a way that accessible parts cannot become live in the event of a failure of the basic insulation.
Protection Class II
Equipment in which protection against electric shock does not rely on basic insulation only, but in which additional safety precautions such as double insulation or reinforced insulation are provided, there is no provision for protective earthing or reliance upon installation conditions.
Protection Class III
Equipment in which protection against electric shock relies on supply at SELV (safety extra-low voltage)and in which voltages higher than those of SELV are not generated.
