Brief Intro
Low-frequency flicker can trigger seizures, and the fluorescent tubes with electronic ballasts are thought to be related to headaches, fatigue, blurred vision, and diminished vision.
Since flicker cannot be directly detected, people seldom realize that flicker is actually the main cause of certain symptoms and discomfort.
By improving the quality of light fixtures, some symptoms of fatigue might be alleviated and work efficiency can be significantly enhanced.
What is “Flicker” in LED lights?
LED Lights often cause invisible flicker, which means, there will be multiple fluctuations in brightness per second. When a power surge in the electric network, a flickering light effect may happen. Due to the rapid fluctuations, this “flicker” phenomenon cannot be seen, but it will have physiological effects on our body, such as eye fatigue, headache, or lack of concentration.
Measuring and Quantifying Flicker: Percent Flicker
A Definition Point of percent flicker means a relative measure of the cyclic variation in the amplitude of light.
A flickering light source will present rapid fluctuations in brightness and the magnitude of these fluctuations use a measure called percent flicker.
Percent flicker is calculated by measuring the relative difference in brightness between the maximum and minimum brightness presented during a flicker cycle. A light source with 0% flicker means that it does not flicker at all, while a 100% flicker value indicates the fluctuations between on and completely off.
Percent Flicker = 100* (A-B) / (A+B)
Flicker Index
The flicker index is “a reliable relative measurement of the fluctuation in output period of different light sources at a specified power frequency”. The flicker index is divided into values from 0 to 1.0, where 0 represents a stable light output. The higher the value, the higher the likelihood of detecting flickering and frequent flashes.

Effect of Flicker Frequency
Not all light sources present the same flicker frequency.
Many LED bulbs will flicker at 100-120 Hz (2x line frequency) and even a 10% flicker will cause a bad effect. At higher frequencies, a higher percentage of flicker is acceptable. At 1.25 kHz or higher, even light sources displaying 100% flicker (ex PWM dimming systems) are acceptable and won’t be considered to produce any harmful effects.
