Discover IP Ratings In LED Lighting For Your Home
In the world of led lighting technology, LED has emerged as a beacon of energy efficiency and longevity, transforming the way we illuminate our homes. As homeowners increasingly make the switch to LED lighting, one crucial factor often overlooked is the IP ratings, which play a pivotal role in determining the suitability of LED fixtures for various environments. In this article, we delve into the significance of IP ratings and why they matter when choosing LED lighting for your home.
What is an IP Rating?
IP stands for “Ingress Protection,” and the IP rating of a lighting fixture indicates its level of protection against intrusion from solids and liquids. The rating is composed of two digits: the first one signifies protection against solids, while the second denotes protection against liquids. The higher the numbers, the greater the protection.
Note: IEC 60529 has been developed to rate and grade the resistance of enclosures of electric and electronic devices against the intrusion of dust and liquids.
Understanding the First Digit: Protection Against Solid Foreign Objects
The first digit in an IP rating ranges from 0 to 6, indicating the level of protection against Solid Foreign Objects. Here’s a breakdown:
- 0: No protection
- 1: Protection against objects larger than 50mm (e.g., a hand)
- 2: Protection against objects larger than 12.5mm (e.g., fingers)
- 3: Protection against objects larger than 2.5mm (e.g., tools and thick wires)
- 4: Protection against objects larger than 1mm (e.g., small tools and wires)
- 5: Dust-protected (Completely prevent contact and ingress of dust is not entirely prevented, but only a sufficient amount of dust will affect the equipment.)
- 6: Dust-tight(complete protection against contact)
For indoor lighting applications in homes, a rating of at least IP20 is generally recommended. This ensures protection against accidental contact and small particles.
Understanding the Second Digit: Protection Against Liquids
The second digit in an IP rating ranges from 0 to 9, indicating the level of protection against liquids. Here’s a breakdown:
- 0: No protection
- 1: Protected against vertical falling water drops
- 2: Water projected by a nozzle (6.3 mm (0.25 in) against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects.
- 3: Protected against spraying water
- 4: Protection against splashing water
- 5: Protection against water jets
- 6: Protection against powerful water jets
- 7: Protected against the effect of temporary immersion in water, up to 1 meter (3 ft 3 in) depth
- 8: Protected against the effect of continuous immersion in water, depth specified by the manufacturer, generally more severe than numeral 7.
- 9: Protected against high pressure and temperature water jets.
For some indoor lighting applications especially wet locations, a rating of at least IP44 is recommended to ensure protection against splashes and damp environments like bathrooms.
Choosing the Right IP Rating for Your Home
Understanding the IP rating is crucial for selecting the right LED lighting for different areas of your home. For instance:
Living Room and Bedrooms (IP20):
These areas typically have a low risk of exposure to water and dust. Fixtures with an IP20 rating provide adequate protection against accidental contact and small particles.
Kitchens (IP20 or higher):
When selecting LED lighting for the kitchen, opting for a minimum IP rating of IP20 or higher is a prudent choice. The kitchen is a dynamic space where various activities, including cooking and washing, expose lighting fixtures to the potential risk of moisture, splashes, and dust. An IP20 rating ensures protection against accidental contact and small particles, making it suitable for most kitchen areas where the risk of liquid ingress is relatively low.
However, considering the typical conditions in kitchens, where water splashes and humidity are common, it’s advisable to lean towards fixtures with higher IP ratings, such as IP44. These higher ratings provide a robust shield against water splashes and moisture, enhancing the durability and safety of LED lighting in this crucial living space.
Bathrooms(IP44 or higher):
In the intricate environment of a bathroom, understanding IP ratings is paramount for selecting lighting fixtures that can withstand the unique challenges posed by moisture and water exposure. Different zones within the bathroom demand varying levels of protection, and IP ratings play a crucial role in ensuring the longevity and safety of lighting installations.
Our bathroom is divided into 4 zones. Below is the definition of each bathroom zone and the adequate IP ratings.
Zone 0 – Inside the bath or shower. Any lighting used in Zone 0 must have a minimum rating of IP67.
Zone 1 – Above the bath or shower to a height of 2.25m. A minimum rating of IP65 is recommended.
Zone 2 – The area stretches an additional 60cm beyond Zone 1 and up to a height of 2.25m from the floor. A minimum IP Rating of IP44 is required.
Zone 3 – Also called the outside zone, covers any areas outside Zone 0,1, and 2. There are no IP ratings recommended here for bathroom lighting. (IP20 is enough)
Given the higher likelihood of exposure to water in bathrooms, it’s advisable to choose fixtures with an IP44 rating or higher. This ensures protection against splashes and moisture. By aligning the appropriate IP ratings with specific bathroom zones, homeowners can strike a balance between aesthetic illumination and practical safeguards against the moisture-laden atmosphere inherent in these spaces.
Outdoor Spaces (Varies):
Outdoor lighting, whether for gardens, pathways, or façade, requires specific IP ratings based on the exposure to the elements. For example, lights in a garden may need a minimum of IP65 to withstand rain and dust effectively.

Conclusion
In the world of LED lighting, paying attention to IP ratings is paramount for ensuring the longevity and safety of your fixtures. While energy efficiency and brightness are essential considerations, overlooking the environmental conditions in which your lights will operate can lead to premature failure and safety hazards. By understanding IP ratings and selecting fixtures accordingly, you can illuminate your home with confidence, knowing that your LED lighting is up to the task in any environment.
