What is “General Lighting” ?
General lighting, also referred to as ambient lighting, means to illuminate equally, non-specific and provide the necessary brightness to an area with appropriate light fixtures.
It serves as the primary source of light in a space, allowing people to see and move around comfortably.
General lighting typically comes from light fixtures like ceiling lights, pendant lights, recessed lighting, and wall-mounted fixtures, which are designed to distribute light broadly and evenly throughout the space. The purpose of general lighting is to create a basic level of illumination, making it easier to perform everyday behaviors, communicate, or navigate within a space.
Applications of General Lighting:
Since general lighting serves as the primary light source in daily life, it is widely used in different kinds of environments, including living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, office spaces, factories, educational facilities and other residences.

What is “Accent Lighting“?
Accent lighting focuses light on a particular area or object. It focuses on highlighting specific objects, architectural features, or areas within a space to create visual interest and emphasis.
The three features of accent lighting are directional, intensity and emphasis. Unlike general lighting, which provides overall illumination, accent lighting is used to draw attention to particular elements or add more ambiance to a certain area.
Applications of Accent Lighting:
- Picture lights: These light fixtures are mounted above or below a piece of artwork to illuminate and emphasize it, such as the Franz collections.
- Wall washers: These light fixtures are used to wash a wall to highlight its texture or unique color.
- Spotlights: Adjustable spotlights are often used to accentuate specific objects, such as a vase, statue, or other collections.

What is “Functional Lighting“?

The main purpose of functional lighting is to ensure that people have the appropriate light to perform tasks with accuracy, efficiency, and be comfortable.
In general, the main difference between accent lighting and functional lighting lies in their purpose and application. Accent lighting is often used to create aesthetics and emphasize specific elements, while functional lighting is primarily about providing sufficient illumination for particular tasks and activities.
Applications of Functional Lighting:
- Kitchen Task Lighting: Under-cabinet lights mounted closer to the middle front edge of the cabinets are used to illuminate food preparation areas and make it easier to cook and work in the kitchen.
- Stair Lighting: LED strip lights are often used to illuminate staircases in buildings.
- Desk Lamps: These lamps provide concentrated lighting for reading, writing, computer work, and other desk-related work. They are widely used in offices and homes.
